Symphony

1st Movement Underway
2nd, 3rd and 4th in beginning thought processes

I started writing this Symphony sometime around 2009.  Originally, I started it with the intention of making a Fantasia for orchestra.  Some of the early manuscripts and Finale(r) files still have this name on it.  As work continued, I realized that what I had written closely resembled Sonata-Allegro form:  a slow introduction followed by an A and then a contrasting B theme.  As soon as I finished the B theme, I could call what I had the Exposition, and then I could work on a development and so on.  I decided to turn the Fantasia into a multi-movement Symphony.  I wanted to have this piece sound more Romantic-esque than my pieces around this time had been.  I have not yet reached the development as other projects were begun, and work on this has been halted for almost 4 or 5 years now.  I recently took it out again and started working on it, and more news on it will be forthcoming.  :)

Viola (or Violin?) Concerto

1st Movement begun and sketches underway

My intention with this piece originally was to write a Viola Concerto.  I've been going back and forth on whether to write it as a Violin Concerto or a Viola Concerto.  As a Viola Concerto, it would add to the viola repertory (as a violist, it would also be something I could perform).  As a Violin Concerto, it could gain more recognition in the musical world.
Overall, I'm still more heavily leaning towards Viola than Violin for this concerto.  I doubt that I will end up making it a Violin Concerto, but I guess we'll see when I start work more in earnest.
I'm especially hoping with this concerto to have a more Romantic Era feel to it.

Clarinet Concerto

Some ideas written down, especially the beginning, and thoughts about where it's going to go in my head.  This will be a classical style Clarinet Concerto very much in the Manheim style, possibly with the Manheim Roller, Manheim Rocket, etc.

Tone Poem (No Set Name yet)

This works is a depiction of my ongoing struggle with an anxiety disorder.  At the age of around 5 years old, I started having panic attacks, though I nor my family knew it at the time.  It has been a tremendous struggle for me, and I still fight on almost a daily basis with it.  Some days are better than others, but it's difficult.  One thing that has been the most difficult is that many others do not understand.

Music has the power to express abstract ideas, and most especially to speak emotions to the heart of the listener with extreme potency.  This piece is my attempt to help others feel what it is like to go through a panic attack.  It is also a metaphor for the struggles that all mankind face living life.  One possible title (though none is for sure set) is "The Life of Man."

The piece starts with the joyful and triumphant entrance into mortality into life.  It is followed by a peaceful melody to represent the joy and happiness of beginning our mortal journey. Both of these sections are very tonal and classical sounding. They are followed by the dark night of despair which uses elements from my Viola Quintet that's entitled "Sunrise."  This section is meant to portray depression and the oncoming of doubt and fear, the typical precursors I have felt before having a panic attack, and is more free-form and less tonal.  After this section (which is where most of my effort has been focused) will come panic, fear, and anger.  This section, which has only minimal work finished, will use mixed meters with Stravinsky-like drive and quasi-serialist sounding melodies to help invoke those feelings of terror and anger.  This section will conclude with the anger of life spent, and a triumphal and beautiful finish, symbolizing man's triumph over the trials of life, and my own desire to overcome my anxiety.

Missal Orchestral Suite

This is an orchestral suite based on the some different Mass texts.  The Overture (what for now will be a stand alone work) is based on the Kyrie, the 2nd Movement will be the Gloria, etc.  Probably, there will be 4-5 movements, the final movement being a rousing finish.  My guess is that it will be a slow, fast, slow, fast type order.

The Overture is finished, and the other movements will soon be started.
